Who was Charlotte Mason?
Charlotte Mason was a British educator who lived from 1842 - 1923. Her mission was to further the education of children, viewing them as whole persons and not just as minds to be trained. Her methods utilized living books, learning through experiences in the arts and nature, and teaching children to respect the world around them self-discipline.
Because of Mason's views of children as person, she saw all children as equal. She knew that all children deserved the same opportunity to learn, and that social class shouldn't dictate the type of education they received. Mason went on to give a serious of lectures that revolutionized education in England. The Home Education Series goes into detail her methods and philosophies.

“The question is not, -- how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education -- but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?”
― Charlotte Mason, 'School Education: Developing A Curriculum'
